¡ARRIBA PERU!

Conquering sand rain like our ancestors did

Proud of its long high seas heritage, SSL Team Peru is looking to leave a mark in modern sailing and set a standard for generations to come. Since 100 BCE, when our ancestors started the sport with the purpose of traveling longer distances to conquer more areas and fish. They would build rafts that would range from 6 to 11 meters long, could carry a load between 10-30 tons, and could travel at speeds of 4-5 knots. It has been asserted that Peruvian indigenous people were even able to reach the coasts of Mexico and even Polynesia with the purpose of doing trade. Today, there is a famous regatta called “The Great Regatta of The Century”, which is done in the town of Cabo Blanco, in the North of Lima, also known for its great surfing waves and fishing records. The regatta consists of a gathering of about 30 traditional fishing sailing boats from around the zone and setting up a long-distance course that local fishermen, together with Peruvian sailors sail through and compete for the cup. Winning it is an honor for the fishermen and their crews.
Our team is a mix of experienced sailors with young spirits and competitive young sailors, with the motivation to learn and adapt to the Gold Cup boat, the SSL 47. The team counts several world titles and Olympic participations under its belt, which provides us with the right mindset and level to challenge any other team for the cup.
We have demonstrated that when Peruvians get together to achieve a goal, we become stronger and tough to beat. We are extremely excited to take this challenge and to be part of the qualified nations to fight for the cup.

The captain

STEFANO PESCHIERA

The 31-year-old began sailing at the age of five with his grandfather aboard a wooden sailboat in Ancón, a bay north of Lima, Peru’s capital. He made history as the first Peruvian male sailor to qualify for the Olympic Games, competing at Rio 2016. He joined his club’s Optimist team in 2003, earning several podium finishes across three World Championships, five South American Championships, four North American Championships, and a European Championship. After graduating from university in the United States and being named College Sailor of the Year in 2018, he launched his full-time campaign for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. That same year, he secured Peru’s qualification for the Games at the World Championships in Aarhus, Denmark. He is also the only Peruvian sailor to have won the Laser Standard South American Championship, claiming the title in 2019. The trophy’s prestigious list of past winners includes sailing legends such as Robert Scheidt and Diego Romero. With six South American Championship titles to his name, he continues to pursue his ambition of becoming Laser World Champion. Over seven years on the Laser circuit, he has earned two nominations to Peru’s Olympic team (2016 and 2020) and two to its Pan American team (2015 and 2019). His achievements also include a gold and a silver medal at the Bolivarian Games (2017 and 2013), eight medal-race appearances, and gold at the 2020 World Cup Series event in Miami.
